| Taking care of a companion bird is a serious responsibility. The PRC insists that each person who adopts a bird understands these responsibilities and can fulfil them. All adoption requests must be made by a responsible person who is prepared to commit totally to the bird they adopt. The PRC encourages children to learn how to relate to birds, but we do not encourage the sole responsibility of the care of the bird as a child’s teaching tool therefore the primary adopter must be an adult over the age of 18. We also require all first bird owners to undertake a Pet Parrot Behaviour workshop or Avian Specialist Consultation before adopting birds from us. We will provide further information once we receive your application. The PRC currently has Adoption Co-ordinators in each state of Australia who will assess your applications. We do not advertise all birds that are available for adoption. You are best to apply for adoption and then we can notify you of what birds are available once you complete the adoption process. If the bird species you are looking for is unavailable you will then be placed on a waiting list. The PRC receives many enquiries by adoptee's for exotic species such as Amazons, Macaws and African Greys. The reality is that such species have not become available for adoption in Australia due to their high demand in the general market place. We have found that the owners of these species will generally sell these parrots due to their market value. Please do not include these species on your application form. Adoption candidates through the PRC are primarily Australian parrot species such as native cockatoos (Sulphur crested cockatoos, Galahs, Corellas, Lorikeets, Cockatiels and other Neophema parrots.), as well as a small number of non-native parrots that occasionally become available, such as, Indian Ringnecks, Alexandrines, Quakers and Sunconures. Please Note: All birds Adopted through the Parrot Rescue Centre are strictly only to be kept as Pet Birds and are not to be kept for Breeding.
